dc.description.abstractThis study deals with the politeness in asking question in class discussion used by students of Teaching Training and Education Faculty Nommensen HKBP University. This study employs qualitative design which aim at describing the politeness strategies used by the students in asking question. The Politeness strategies which are related, those are proposed by Leech (1993); (1) tact maxim; (2) Generosty maxim; (3) Approbation maxim; (4) Modesty maxim; (5) Agreement maxim; and (6) Sympathy maxim. The subjects are 8 (eight) group discussion. The results show that the students or group discussion express their politeness in asking question by using four types of politeness stated by Leech which are (1) tact maxim; (2) Modesty maxim; (3) Agreement maxim; and (4) Sympathy maxim. The dominant type is tact maxim (85,71%) with polite category. The speaker apply the politeness by using question word without threat the hearer’s face.en_US
