dc.description.abstractThis study is aimed to analyze the types of Genres on the English textbook used by the first year students of SMA N 1 Balige. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of genre on English textbook used by the first year students of SMA N 1 Balige and to find out the dominant type of genre on English textbook used by the first year students of SMA N 1 Balige. The research design of the study is descriptive qualitative research. The object of the study is the reading text on the English textbook created by Herman Benyamin entitled by Advance learning English 1and published by Grafindo Media Pratama, 2015. The data was collected only by taking observation sheet. It means that the writer observed reading texts on students’ English textbook and analyzed its genre based on the linguistic features and the generic structure of each text. The final result of this study shows that there are five types of genre found on the English textbook they are Recount text 17,5%, Narrative text 29,8%, Procedure text 22,9%, Descriptive 15,8%, and News item 14,4%. The genres applied in the textbook based on the generic structures and linguistic features. It was also found that Narrative text is the dominant genre existed in the English textbook. It caused for Narrative text has communicative purpose, that is, to entertain the listener or the reader about a story in the past related to the real life.en_US
