An Analysis of Modality in the Lyrics of Kari Jobe Album Spiritual Songs

Abstract

This thesis analyzes the use of modalities singer in the song lyrics of the album Majestic by a famous American named Kari Jobe. This thesis identifies the types of modality and reveals the most dominant type of modality used in the lyrics of the song. The research used the theory of Systemic Functional Grammar which focused on Interpersonal Function. The research method used were a mixed method, namely qualitative and quantitative. The data used were modals and clauses which are considered as modalities in song lyrics in the album Majestic Kari Jobe. Found the results of the analysis showed that there were four types of modalities, namely probability, usuality, obligation and inclination. While the modality values constituted high, medium and low. In the Kari Jobe song lyrics, the writer found that the song lyrics tend to use probability modalization with medium degree. The results also showed that 37 clauses contained modalities in the lyrics of the song Kari Jobe. Around 13 songs of Kari Jobe's majestic album contained 20% probability, 6% frequency, 11% necessity. In the lyrics of this song, the inclination type was absent.
