THE EFFECT OF GRAMMARLY APPLICATION AS ONLINE GRAMMAR CHECKER MEDIA TOWARD STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY IN THE SECOND SEMESTER IN NOMMENSEN HKBP UNIVERSITY

Abstract

Grammarly is an application to detect errors grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choise, and writing style. The objective of this study is to find that the effect of Grammarly application as an online grammar checker toward students writing ability at the Second Semester in Nommensen HKBP University. This study was conducted by applying experimental quantitative research. The sample of the study was the second semester in English Department at Nommensen HKBP University. The researcher took group A as experimental group which consist of 10 students and group B as control group which consist of 10 students. The population this study was 20 students, the sample was selected randomly. The research instrument of this research is the form of writing test. Then the test divided into two: pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test in the experimental class is 60,9 and post-test is 74,9. Then the mean score of pre-test in control group is 61,6 and the post-test is 65,4. It is conducted that the experimental group is higher than control group. The result that t-calculate > t-table as the level of significance p = 0,05 (9,3 > 2101). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that there is a significant effect of using Grammarly as online grammar checker toward students’ writing ability in the second semester in English Department at Nommensen HKBP University.
