RHETORICAL DEVICES IN SONG LYRICS BY JAMIE MILLER

Abstract

This study is about the use of rhetorical devices in Jamie’s song lyrics. The problems of this study are what types of rhetorical devices which are expressed and which types of rhetorical devices are dominantly used in Jamie’s song lyrics. The objectives of the study are to find and describe the rhetorical devices used in Jamie’s song lyrics. The result of this study is expected to enrich our knowledge in understanding the types of rhetorical devices in Jamie’s song lyrics. Researcher used qualitative research as a method of this study. The data were all words, phrases and sentences containing rhetorical devices. Rhetorical devices which are found in Jamie’s song lyrics are alliteration, anaphora, symploce, synonym, polyptoton, epistrophe, anadiplosis, simile, metaphor, personification, and irony. Finally the result of the study shows that there are 43 expressions that contain rhetorical devices. They consist of 18,66% alliteration expressions, 6,97% anaphora expression, 4,65% symploce expression, 11,62% synonym expressions, 6,97% polyptoton expressions, 13,95% epistrophe expressions, 2,32% anadiplosis expression, 16,27% simile expressions, 11,62% metaphor expressions, 4,65% personification expressions, and 2,32% irony expressions. Alliteration is the most dominantly used in his song lyrics. By using this expression Jamie wants to convey and emphasize about his concept, opinion and ideas in her song lyrics and also to give ornament to her literary works. The result of this study is hoped able to help the readers and the listeners of Jamie song lyrics to get the message which is revealed on the song lyrics.
