    Abstract
    This thesis is about An Analysis of Expressive Speech Acts used by the English Teacher at SMP Negeri 1 Sipahutar. The objective of the study was to classify the types of expressive speech acts are used by the English teacher at SMP Negeri 1 Sipahutar and to know the dominant type of of expressive speech acts are used by the English teacher at SMP Negeri 1 Sipahutar. This study was conducted by applying Descriptive Qualitative research. The writer recorded 4 English teachers’s utterances to get the data. The instrument of collecting data was Observation. The data were obtained on English teachers’ utterances. The writer found there were 36 utterances performed by the English teachers. The finding of data analysis showed that types of expressive speech acts used by English teacher were thanking, apologizing, congratulating, welcoming, dissatisfaction, complaining and condoling. The result showed the total number of each expressive speech acts are thanking is 30,56%, apologizing is 16,67%, congratulating is 25%, welcoming is 13,89%, dissatisfaction is 2,78%, complaining is 5,55% and condoling is 5,55%. The dominant type was expressive speech act thanking. The benefits of this research for state and nation especially for students and English teachers are this research can be used as a source for teaching pragmatic material, student’s sources in learning more about speech acts and for the next researcher especially in pragmatics expressive speech acts although it is no longer researching teachers’ speech acts but can be in the form of novel, movie or talkshow.
