AN ANALYSIS OF MODALITY IN THE SPRITUAL SONG LYRIC OF THE HILLSONG WORSHIP ALBUM

Abstract

This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Modality in the lyrics of the spiritual song Hillsong worship album. This thesis identifies the type, value and orientation of the modality which aims to determine the meaning of modality in spiritual songs, especially on the Hillsong Worsip album and reveal the modality that are often uses in spiritual song lyrics. The writer uses Systemic Functional Linguistics which focuses on Interpersonal functions of modality. This study method is a mixed method with data in the form of song lyrics. In analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of M.A.K Halliday (2004) which reveals that there are two types of modality: Modalization (Probability, Usuality), Modulation (Obligation, Inclination). The value of modality High, Median and Low, and the last Orientation is Subjective, Objective, Explicit and Implicit. The final result of this study, in this study identified 88 modality of the 28 songs analyzed in the album Hillsong Worship. In spiritual song lyrics, the writer finds that Hillsong worship often uses Probability modalization with the results of analysis (60,2%), Usuality (1,1%), Obligation (21,5%) and Inclination (18,1%). The type that is rarely used is the Usuality. The values that are often used are Median with results (64,7%), High (14.7%) and Low (20.4%). and the most frequently used orientations were Subjective with results (57,9%), Objective (10,2%), Explicit (17,0%) and Implicit (14,7%).
