dc.description.abstractThis study investigated the student’s ability in English conversation. The title of the research is analysisthe cohesion ofstudents’ narrative writing. Students have difficulty using proper word selection such as use between a cardinal number and nominal number and misinformation in the use of grammar in the sentence.This research is aimed at, 1)To find out the types cohesionmade by the students in writing narrative text of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 24 Medan; 2)To know the dominant types cohesion made by the students in writing narrative text of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 24 Medan. The method of this research is qualitative research. This study was conducted on 15 students of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 24 Medan. The data were obtained through students’ narrative writing. The data are analyzed using the categorization of cohesion, namely grammatical and lexical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1976).The result showed that the students used five types cohesion innarrative writing, including; Grammatical Cohesion (Reference is 39,5%, Substitution is 0%, Ellipsis is 13.5%, Conjunction is 22.5%) and Lexical Cohesion (Reiteration is 24,5% and Collocation is 0%). So, the reference in grammatical cohesion becomes the dominant type in this research with 39,5%.en_US
