dc.description.abstractThematic progression is a way of developing themes and rhemes in clauses. In other words, thematic progression is a strategy or a specific way to make writing more effective. In addition, thematic progression is a prominent aspect of systemic linguistic functional. Thematic progression has been widely studied in English over the past few years and proves that is very important element in writing. In other words, good writing is effective writing. Therefore, themes and rhemes play a role in creating good texts. Besides that, thematic progression has also been done for many purposes. This study aims to describe the pattern of thematic progression pattern in a student‟s writingand to know which thematic pattern of progression n is widely used in the student‟s writing. Therefore, this research entitled Thematic Organization on Students‟ Writing Analytical Exposition Text by the Second Semester English Department Nommensen HKBP University Medan. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data were analyzed by classifying the types of thematic progression pattern from students‟ paper, after that analyzing the dominant types of thematic progression pattern made by the students. Finally, the research result showed that there are 86 types made by the second semester students in writing analytical exposition text. Re-iteration theme pattern indicate the dominant type made by students. The number of re-iteration theme pattern type are 40 and percentage is 70,17% followed by zig-zag theme pattern has 5 with percentage 8,8%, the third is multiple theme has 12 with percentage 21% which has it can be concluded that the dominant type of students‟ thematic progression pattern made by the students in writing paragraph analytical exposition text is on constant theme pattern.en_US
