dc.description.abstractThis thesis entitled Politeness Strategies Used By Students and PoliticiansIn “Mata najwa: Ujian Reformasi” Talk Show. The objectives of this study are to find the types of politeness strategies and to find out the factors affecting the guest stars choices politeness strategies. Discourse Analysis which belongs to qualitative research was used by the writer to conduct this study. The data of this thesis derived from identify and classify the types of politeness strategies in “Mata Najwa: Ujian Reformasi”transcript. The writer employed Brown and Levinson’s theory to clasify the use of politeness strategies that were used by the speaker. The factor that affecting the choice of politeness strategies were analyzed by using Brown and Levinson’s theory as well. The study revealed that the guest stars used almost all of the politeness strategies. The result showed that there were identified 40 politeness data found. The finding of the research then classified to Brown an Levinson (1987); Positive Poliness (26), Negative Politeness (2), On Record (4), and Off Record (8). The factor that affecting the guest stars choice the politeness strategies were the payoffs and the sociological variables which consisted of social distance, relative power and rank of impositionen_US
