dc.description.abstractThis study is focused on analyzing expressive speech act on students’ conversation in English Department of Nommensen HKBP University and finding out the dominant types of expressive speech act used by students. This study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method and the data are analyzed descriptively. The instrument of collecting data of this study was observing 5 students conversations. There were 43 utterances categorized as expressive speech used by the students. The findings of the data analysis showed that types of expressive speech act used by the students are thanking, congratulating, apologizing, complimenting, dissatisfaction, wishing, complaining, and condoling. The result showed that the total number of each expressive speech act are; thanking is 37,21%, congratulating is 11,62%, apologizing is 16,30%, complimenting is 9,30%, dissatisfaction is 4,65%, wishing is 13,95%, complaining is 2,32% and condoling is 4,65%. The dominant types of expressive speech which used by students is expressive of thanking. This study is expected to be a valuable knowledge and information for English Department students especially in Pragmatic fields.en_US
