dc.description.abstractThis paper is an analysis of errors in pronouncing English diphthong at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Pangururan. The problem in this study is what diphthongs are mispronounced by the students and what the dominant error’s type that doing of students. The purpose of this study is: To find out the error that the student faced in pronouncing the English diphthong and to find out the error’s type that the student doing in English pronunciation. This thesis is a descriptive qualitative study. The errors in pronouncing English diphthongs were assumed to be affected by many factors. The factor was the habit of the students in pronouncing the word that contains of diphthongs. The habit could be from imitating, mishearing, and mispronouncing. The students mispronounced the diphthong /i ə/, /eə/, /ei /, /ai /, /əʊ /, /aʊ /. Finally, of the six diphthongs the writer concluded that score of error made by students in class 10 social of SMA Negeri 1 Pangururan so high. The following score obtained each of symbol i ə: 70 (20%), eə: 71 (20%), ei : 51 (14%), ɑi : 17 (5%), əʊ : 74 (21%), aʊ: 70 (19%). The results of the analysis, the most diphthongs that students' errors in pronouncing diphthong is [əʊ] . The result of research also show error types of students. Error type of Selection of an incorrect element reach to 239 (65%), Omission of some required element reach to 96 (26%), Addition of some unnecessary of incorrect element reach to 20 (5%), then Misordering of elements reach to15 ( 4%). The results of the analysis, the most error type that students' doing is Selection of an incorrect element This study gives information about students difficulties in pronouncing diphthongs. Then, based on the research, the students should be given a lot of training and practice with regard to pronunciation that they can acquire the habit of using the correct pronunciation of English words containing English vowels properly.en_US
