dc.description.abstractThis thesis is a study about discourse markers in essay writing in tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of discourse markers that used by tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan students in the essay writing and to find out the most frequent inappropriateness in terms of the use of discourse markers in tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan students. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The subject of the study is the first grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan and the students in X TPTU 1 is as the object of the study. The data were the students’ writing that were analyzed by using Fraser Taxonomy (1999). Finally, the result of the study shows there are seven types of discourse markers found in writing descriptive text of the first grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan,namely reason discourse markers(25,31) , elaborative discourse markers (26,58), contrastive discourse markers (13,92) , inferential discourse markers (12,65), exemplifier markers (5,06), sequantial discourse markers (2,53), conclusive discourse markers (13,92). The most dominant type of discourse markers from the other types of discourse markers is reason discourse markers and elaborative discourse markers.en_US
