dc.description.abstractPoliteness strategy is behavior shows a friendly attitude in communicating with others, thus creating a good relationship. Politeness in speech can increase popularity and boost one's popularity and image, especially as a public figure has a great influence on the world, every time he speaks everyone can trust, be heard, be noticed, and be proud of by the community. Therefore, researcher is interested in examining Politeness strategies in Barack Obama's speech as a President. The purpose of this study is to find types of politeness and dominant types of politeness strategies in Barack Obama's speeches. The research design in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data taken are Barack Obama's speeches that contain Politeness strategies and the data source is speech transcripts from YouTube. The result of data analysis shows that there are 124 utterances that contain politeness strategy. There are 4 types of politeness strategies found which are realized into 25 sub-categorizations. Then the most dominant type of politeness strategy is positive politeness (59%) which is realized with Be Optimistic as much as 20 data (16%).en_US
