The Effect of Using GIST Strategy Toward The First Year Students’ Reading Comprehension at SMAN 1 Beringin
Abstract
Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students could not
comprehend the meaning of texts in their text book at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some students could not understand about the content of reading text and identify the detailed information of the text, so the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The research was administered at SMAN 1 Beringin. The subject of the research was the first year students of SMAN 1 Beringin, and the object of this research was the effect of using GIST strategy. The design of this research was Quantitave experimental design. The population of this research was all of the first year students. The total number of population was 253 students. Because the number of population was large, the researcher used random sampling by taking two classes as sample; X1 that consisted of 15 students as experimental group, and X6 that consisted of 15 students as control group, so the number of samples from two classes was 30 students. To analyze the data, the researcher adopted paired sample t-test formula by using manual. After analyzing the data, the researcher found the result analyzing the data t0 22,62 was higer than ttable 7,65. Therefore Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that using GIST strategy has given a better effect for students’ reading comprehension the First Year Students of SMAN 1
Beringin.
