Abstract
Challenge means “anything that requires a lot of mental or physical effort to succeed and therefore tests one's skills. While the strategy is a long-term plan that is drawn up to realize the cooperation of certain goals and objectives. Challenges and strategies in teaching English is a way to face and overcome problems in teaching English as a foreign language. This study tries to answer two problems, namely (1) what are the challenges faced by English teachers at SMP Negeri 2
Tapian Nauli, and (2) what strategies are used by teachers at SMP Negeri 2
Tapian Nauli in teaching English. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the IX grade teacher of SMP Negeri 2
Tapian Nauli. Data collection techniques used interviews, questionnaires, video recordings of observations 4 times in class IX teacher meetings. The results of this study are learning to record videos for 4 meetings, interviews and filling out questionnaires. The results of the research are (1) there are 3 challenges faced by teachers of SMP Negeri 2 Tapian Nauli in teaching English, namely student absorption, lack of funds for school needs and lack of vocabulary (2) 4 strategies used by English teachers in teaching English English at SMP Negeri 2 Tapian Nauli, namely direct instruction, small group work, discussions, and sometimes using cooperative learning. The discussion of this research, the author finds challenges that do not only come from within, challenges from outside are also influential, namely SMP Negeri 2 is still included in what regional schools it is not sufficient and is still very limited. Lessons to support learning based on the industrial era 4.0 are still very difficult, they are not familiar with google classroom because parents' financial factors are also a challenge for teachers who have not been able to apply technology-based learning.
