AN ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN “BEFORE SUNRISE” MOVIE
Abstract
This research aims to describe two main problems, namely (1) What kinds of figurative language can be found in the film Before Sunrise? and (2) How acceptable is the figurative language translated in the movie? The data in this study is in the form of speech in the script of the film before sunrise by Richard Linklater which contains a style of figurative language. This type of research is qualitative research. The data collection method used in this study is a method of listening combined with tapping techniques and recording techniques. The results showed that there were 71 figurative languages in the "Before Sunrise" movie. The figurative languages are divided into three types. Metaphor is the dominant figurative language found in the movie. There are 51 metaphors which found in the movie. The metaphors are divided into two types, they are orientational metaphor and structural metaphor. There are 30 orientational metaphors and 21 structural metaphors. After metaphor, there are 10 hyperboles discovered in the movie. And finally the writer discovered 10 similes in the movie.The result of the translation analysis is: the translations of metaphor are included in 53.1% of Ideal-Acceptable translations, 18.3% of Acceptable translations, 24.4% of Unaccaptable translations, and 4.1% of Failed translations. The translations of Hyperbole are 50% included into Ideal-Acceptable translation, 40% included into Acceptable translation, and 10% included into Unaccaptable translation. The translations of Simile are 50% included into Ideal-Acceptable translation and 50% included into Unacceptable translation.
