THE FIGURATIVE LANGUAGES ANALYSIS IN POETRY WRITING AT FIFTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT HKBP NOMMENSEN UNIVERSITY MEDAN
Abstract
Figurative language is defined as a way of saying something other than the usual way, and more narrowly it is defined as a way of saying one thing and meaning another. This study analyses figurative language in poetry written by fifth semester English students at HKBP University Nommensen Medan. The purpose of this study was to describe the types of figurative language and the interpretation of the overall content used in the poetries written by students. The participants were 15 students at HKBP University Nomensen Medan. Descriptive qualitative design was used to classify and analyse the data. Data collection techniques used assignments and documentation. The data were taken from students writing poetry.The results of this study found that poetry by students used 10 types of figure of speech according to Araya's theory, namely personification, simile, metaphor, paradox, hyperbole, irony, synecdoche, metonymy, allegory and antithesis. All poetry written by students have been interpreted based on their meaning, message.
