An Analysis of Students Speaking Disfluency in Oral Presentation at the Fifth Semester Students Majoring in English Education Nommensen HKBP University
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the speech difluency of the 5thsemester students of HKBP Nommensen University Medan in the 2021/2022 academic year when making presentations in class. This study uses a theory (Gleason & Ratner, 1998) that explains the process of producing language. In producing language, discovery, and disfluency. Qualitative research is the method used in conducted this research, namely analyzing types of the disfluency such as hesitation, filler words, repetition, and false start. The aims of this study were 1) To find out the types of student’s dysfluency in oral presentations. 2) To find out how to overcome the causes of speaking disfluency in oral presentations. The data obtained are in the form of utterances from 5th-semester students of HKBP Nommensen University Medan. In collecting data, researchers conducted observations and interviews. The data collection technique is that students make oral presentations, use audio to record presentation content, observe and conduct interviews. The researcher analyzed that when students did presentations, various speech impediments were found, namely hesitation 4 (14.84%), repetition 8 (29.62%), false start 2 (7.40%) and filler words 13 (48.14%). The most dominant types of speaking disfluency found in the presentations of fifth semester students are filler words totaling 13 (48.14%).
