The Politeness Strategies Used by Female and Male Teachers in the Teaching-Learning Process at SMA Negeri 7 Medan
Abstract
This study deal with the analysis of politeness strategies used by female and male teachers in the teaching-learning process. This study attempted two answers to the problems, namely (1) what is the dominant type used by female and male teachers in the teaching-learning process at SMA Negeri 7 Medan, and (2) what are the advantages of using the dominant type of politeness strategies in the teaching- learning process at SMA Negeri 7 Medan. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The object of this study was five female teachers and five male teachers. The collecting of data has applied the observation with Handycam as the instrument. The finding of this study indicated that different gender of teachers utilized different kinds of politeness strategies. The teachers used four types of politeness strategies, namely: bald-on record was 10 utterances, positive politenes was 19 utterances, negative politeness was 9 utterances, and off-record strategy was 2 utterances. The politeness strategies were the dominant types. (2) There are some advantages of using the dominant type in the teaching-learning process at SMA Negeri 7 Medan. There were 40 utterances used by female and male teachers that indicated politeness strategies. It showed positive politeness as the dominant type. This type was the dominant type because the professional teacher realize that their good attitude is imitated by the students in their daily life. Besides that, the students were comfortable communicating with the teachers.
