SPEECH ACT IN THE ELLEN SHOW: CHRIS HEMSWORTH SPEAKS SOME STRANGE LANGUAGES
Abstract
This research entitled “Speech Acts in The Ellen Show: Chris Hemsworth speaks some strange language”. This research is aimed at finding out the sentence of Speech Act and the interpretation in the video of The Ellen Show: Chris Hemsworth Speaks some strange languages. The research applied Descriptive Qualitative Research. The data is taken from a conversation on the Youtube channel the Ellen Show. The writer will analyze the speech act kinds contained in conversations on The Ellen Show on YouTube. Speech Acts have two categories namely, the direct speech act and the indirect speech act. A direct speech act will occur if the structure and the function have a direct relationship (Yule, 1996). At the same time, if there is an indirect relationship between the structure and function of the discourse, indirect speech acts will occur. The analysis found that there are direct speech acts and indirect speech acts in the conversation between Ellen, Chris Hemsworth, and the audience. The direct speech acts categories consist of 41 utterances in three types, 12 utterances for Declarative, 6 utterances for Imperative, and 23 utterances for Interrogative, then followed by indirect speech act only 1 utterance for Declarative and 2 data for Imperative. So it showed that interrogative is more dominantly found in the category of direct speech, with 52,2%. From the finding also there are the interpretations in each utterance as one of them is drawing a suggestion of what the speaker wants to do when the speaker says something.
