An Analysis of Students Difficulties in Translating English Phrasal Verb in Sentences into Indonesian

Abstract

This study aims to analysis the students’ difficulties in translating English Phrasal verb in Sentence into Indonesian. The subject of this study was the Eleventh Grade Students of SMK HKBP Sidikalang. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by giving a test which consists of 20 items of English phrasal verb that must be translated to Indonesian. Based on the data analysis, the students' difficulties generally are unability in choosing an appropriate or equivalent diction mostly caused by unability to choose an appropriate or equivalent diction to replace the word of an English phrasal verb, so that they produced the differences meaning between the source language and the target language. Another students' difficulties are in understanding the context of the sentence in each item, guessing the exact meaning of an English phrasal verb in the sentence, choosing the right method to translate the sentence, and also lacking of vocabulary. The result of this study showed that the Eleventh Grade Students of SMK HKBP Sidikalang have some difficulties in translating English phrasal verb in Sentences into Indonesian. They need more teach about the way of translating and the teacher should give more attention to train the stude nts in translating English phrasal verb.
