THE ANALYSIS OF SPEECH FUNCTION USED BY ENGLISH TEACHER IN ENGLISH TEACHING AT SMA SWASTA HKBP SIDORAME MEDAN
Abstract
Every aspect of human’s life must be fulfilled by a language in undergoing their daily routines, for instance, sign, symbol, or the oral speech, etc; these belong to a language. This study was conducted to find out speech function in the English teaching at SMA Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan. This research was used descriptive qualitative research. The method of this research is used qualitative analysis. The research question was answered in analysis the data. The concepts of speech function were analyzed by using Halliday theory. The result of this research shows that 3 types of speech function are found in the data, the data were obtained on teacher’s utterances. The writer found there were 63 teacher’s utterances on types of speech function. The finding of data analysis showed that types of speech function used in “SMA Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan” were declarative statement, interrogative question, and command imperative. The result showed the total number of speech function are declarative statement is 38%, interrogative question is 49%, and command imperative is 13%. The dominant type was interrogative question. The benefits of this research for state and nation especially for students and English teachers are this research can be used as a source for teaching semantic material, student’s sources in learning more about speech function and for the next researcher especially in semantics speech function.
