    Abstract
This study focused on finding out the effect of applying the Smart Fingers Coding Technique on students' ability in mastering tenses. The objective of the study is to find out whether or not the Smart fingers Coding Technique affects students' ability in mastering tenses. This study was conducted by applying experimental quantitative research. The subject of the study was the second-year students of SMK Sw. HKBP Sidikalang. The writer took XI-A which consists of 10 students as an experimental class with used smart fingers coding technique and XI-B which consists of 10 students as the control group used the conventional method. The population of this study was 20 students which consist of four classes. The writer took two classes as random sampling to see the effect of the smart fingers coding technique in teaching grammar. The data were taken by giving grammar tests. The tests were divided into two tests: pre-test and post-test for both experimental and control groups. The mean score of the pre-test in the experimental class is 60 and the post-test is 78.6. The mean score of the pre-test in the control group is 58.6 and the post-test is 65.2. It is conducted that the mean score of the experimental group is higher than the control group. The result that t-calculated > t-table as the level of significance p=0.05 (4.1 > 2.101). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It is suggested that teachers of English subjects apply Smart Fingers Coding Technique as an alternative teaching technique to help students' ability in mastering tenses at the eleventh grade of Senior High School.
