Local Wisdom in Pictures Contained in English Textbook: An Analysis of Illustration in English Textbook For 7th Grade Students in SMP Swasta RK Deli Murni Diski
Abstract
This study aims to analyzed what was local wisdom represented in the picture in English textbook of the 7th grade in Junior High School, what types of local wisdom was dominant in the pictures, and what the benefit of local wisdom for 7th grade Junior High School in studying this English textbook. The subject of this study is an English textbook for the 7th grade in Junior High School: Entitled “Bahasa Inggris, When English Rings A Bell (untuk SMP/Mts kelas VII)”. This study was in the form of descriptive qualitative analysis which was qualitative in nature. This study analyzed using theory by Sugiyono (2018). The data was analyzed as proposed by Miles and Huber (2014:10). The data was collected through research instrument that is document. The pictures investigate were then categorized into three themes that are value, teacher-student interaction, student- student interaction. The representation of local wisdom types contained in this textbook can be analyzed in this research through semiotic theory, visual grammar framework and the four dimensions of culture. Using visual grammar framework
as proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) and the concept of culture in the Four Dimensions proposed by Adaskou, Britten, and Fashi (1990), the study analysis pictures contained in one English textbook intended 7th grade in Junior High School. This study found that semantic sense of culture is dominating the distinctive recommended to the teacher use English textbook for 7th grade in Junior High School entitled Bahasa Inggris, When English Rings A Bell (untuk SMP/Mts kelas VII) because the representation of local wisdom is showed in this book.
