THE EFFECT OF USING MENTAL MODEL ON STUDENT’S SPEAKING ABILITY AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMA MARISI
Abstract
The Objective of the study was to examine and prove whether or not mental model affected speaking ability at the eleventh grade of SMA Marisi Medan. The research was conducted by using experimental quantitative desigan. This study deals with the effect of mental model on students speaking ability at the eleventh grade students of SMA Marisi Medan. The population of this study was the students at eleventh grade of SMA Marisi Medan. There were four classes of which students were 30 in each class. The population was totally 60 students. The sample was divided into two groups. XI MIA 1 as experimental group was a group who was taught by applying mental model and XI MIA 2 as control group was taught by applying conventional model. The instrument of collecting data was speaking test. From the data calculation, the researcher found that the mean score of experimental group was 24, mean score of control group 20.1, deviation score of experimental group ( dx²) was 1607 and deviation of control group ( dy² ) was 454.7. It means that the mental model is significantly affected by the speaking achievement of the eleventh grade students of SMA Marisi Medan. The Improvement of speaking achievement of students who were taught by using mental model was better than students who were taught without using mental model. Therefore, it was suggested to English teachers to apply mental model in teaching speaking especially for students of senior high school.
