AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ NEEDS OF SPEAKING MATERIALS IN AN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK FOR THE FIRST YEAR AT EIGHTH GRADE IN SMPN 17 MEDAN
Abstract
This study was aimed to analyze the students’ needs of the speaking materials in English Textbook of eighth grade in junior high school. The objectives of this research to find out the students’ needs in speaking materials in an English textbook for the first year at eighth grade in SMP Negeri 17 Medan and whether the materials of English textbook have accommodated the students’ needs for speaking skill in eighth grade in junior high school, this study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was class VIII-9 of SMP Negeri 17 Medan which consist of 30 students. Subject of this research class was taken using a technique researcher randomly. The questionnaires was used to obtain data from students. The results of this study indicate that there were the students’ needs in speaking materials in an English Textbook for the First Year at Eighth in SMPN 17 Medan are the vocabulary needs 70%, the pronunciation needs 63,3%, the interaction needs 53,3%, the performance needs 36,7%, the structure needs 30%, and the transaction need 16,5%. The vocabulary and Pronunciation were the student’s needs in speaking material of eighth grade in SMP Negeri 17 Medan. The book material show the interaction needs and performance needs as the material. The learning material in the book are not show the pronunciation and vocabulary needs as the material yet. They were still not yet accommodate the students’ needs in speaking material of eighth grade in SMP Negeri 17 Medan.
