An Analysis of Contextual Meaning on the Idiomatic Expressions in The Parent Trap Film Script.
Abstract
Idiomatic expressions are often used by the people when they are communicating. Idiom is an expressing which can be a term or a group of words whose meaning cannot be deduced from the literal definition. The meaning of idiomatic expressions can be defined by contextual meaning, whereas contextual meaning is the meaning of a word according to situation in which they were used. The writer attempted to answer the two research questions, they are: 1) what contextual meanings of the idioms are found in The Parent Trap film script? 2) what types of idioms found in The Parent Trap ? And In conducting the study, the writer applied the descriptive qualitative method to analyze all the samples in order to classify and interpret them. The writer found out 1) Contextual meaning that found in the script are formal/informal, object context, context of purpose, context of situation, context of time, mood context, context of organs, context of place, linguistic context, and context of language. 2) The percentage of idioms used in the film script are English phrasal compounds 46,80%, Slang 25,53%, Figure of speech 19,15%, Abbreviation 4,26%, proper names 2,13%, substitutes 2,13%. It also proved that a meaning is having a close relationship with it context. The writer hopes that there will be more of students who are interested in analyzing idiomatic expression to increase their knowledge.
