The difficulties of the engineering students in speaking English at Nommensen HKBP University Medan.
Abstract
The Objectives of this research is to find out the difficulties of the engineering students in speaking English at Nommensen HKBP University Medan. The research design that is used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The sources of the data were student’s utterance from the interview. The data was collected from interview and recording. The data were analyzed by reducing the data, presenting the data, analyzing the data and taking the conclusion. The findings of the study showed that, first the students had difficulties to express their ideas in speaking English. The difficulties of speaking English are first inhibition, second nothing to say, third low or uneven participation and the last mother tongue use. The researcher found that the students still difficult in pronunciation and students were lack of vocabulary. The researcher concluded that 30% of students difficult to speak English because they was afraid of being wrong and ashamed. This caused was included in the difficulty inhibition category. 33,33% of students difficult to speak English because students have no motive to express themselves. This difficulty included the Nothing to say difficulty category. 36,
67% of students difficult to speak English because students used mother tongue more often than English this difficulty included the Mother tongue use difficulty category.
