AN ANALYSIS OF POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE POLITENESS USED BY TEACHER AND STUDENTS IN TEACHING LEARNING PROCCESS AT TENTH GRADE IN SMK NEGERI 6 MEDAN
Abstract
The study deals with An analysis of positive and negative politeness used by teacher and students in teaching learning process at tenth grade in SMK Negeri 6 Medan. The objectives of this study are to find out what types of negative and positive politeness used by teacher and students in teaching learning process and to find out what types of negative and positive politeness is dominantly used by teacher and students in teaching learning process. The research design of this study is qualitative design. The scope of this study is focus on Positive and Negative Politeness in teaching learning process which found in SMK Negeri 6 Medan. Technique of collecting data of this study is audio and video recording utterances of the teacher and students. there are 56 data of positive and negative politeness that found in this study. The conclusions are the positive politeness divided to notice ; attend to hearer is 11, exaggerate is 1, intensity interest to H is 1, use in-group identity markers is 7, seek agreement is 2 , presuppose /raise/assert common ground is 2, joke is 1, offer/ promise is 4,be optimistic is 1, include both the speaker and hearer is 3, give (ask for) reason is 3, assume or assert reciprocity is 4, give gift to the hearer is 4. While in negative politeness those are, be conventionally indirect is 3, be pessimistic is 4, question / hedge is 1, go on record as incurring as a debt is 1, apologize is 1, impersonalize sand the hearer is 1, nominalize is 1. The result showed that the statement was dominant of positive politeness strategies and the kind of positive politeness that dominantly was notice ; attend to hearer. It shows that there are good relationship and good cooperation between teacher and students in teaching learning process. it is suggested the future teacher and students should apply politeness especially positive and negative politeness in teaching learning process to make good communication. it is also suggested for the future researcher to study more about politeness using this thesis as the reference.
