    Abstract
    This study is attemptsAnalysis of Phrasal Verb Usage in Writing News Item Text in Fifth Semester Students of English Department. The objectives of this research is to know the types and dominant type of phrasal verb in writing text with free topic in new item text by 35 students. The research is content analysis design. The instrument for collecting data is writing test that written by the fifth semester student’s of English Department in Nommensen HKBP University. After classifying the student’s writing, the writer found two types of phrasal verb they are (a)transitive separable phrasal verb and (b)intransitive inseparable phrasal verb. The writer found the dominant type of phrasal verb in writing news item text, the result are: transitive separable phrasal verb with 14 sentences contain 14 phrasal verb or (33%) from all the total of student’s writing and intransitive inseparable phrasal verb with 28 sentences contain of phrasal verb or (67%) from all the total of student’s writing.
