AN ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACT PERFORMED BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT LECTURERS OF NOMMENSEN HKBP UNIVERSITY

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze directive speech act on English lecturer performance of English Department in Nommensen HKBP University and finding out the dominant types of directive speech act used by the lecturers. This study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method and the data are analyzed descriptively. The instrument of collecting data of this study was observing 5 lecturer’s performances and transcribing his/her utterances. There were 63 utterances categorized as directive speech used by the lecturers. The findings of the data analysis showed that types of directive speech act used by the lecturers are command/order, suggestion, invitation, request, warning, and prohibition. The result showed that the total number of each directive speech act are; command/order (41,27%), suggestion (12,70%), invitation (17,46), request (17,46), warning (6,35%), and prohibition (4,76%). The dominant types of directive speech act which used by students is directive of command. The command is believed to be frequently used by lecturer to commit students to do lecturers’ direction. It’s recommended for EFL lecturer/teacher to facilitate students to communicate by using directive speech act appropriately. This study is expected to be a valuable knowledge and information for English Department students especially in Pragmatic fields.
