IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH IMMERSION PROGRAM METHOD
Abstract
The study is to out whether the immersion program method improvers students’ speaking ability .This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the first years students of SMA Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan. There were two kinds of data colleted during the study, quantitative and qualitative data. The instrument of collecting data of quantitative data was speaking test while diary notes for qualitative data. Based on qualitative data, the students who were difficult in studying speaking English can be improved as long as they follow the teaching learning process through the method. Based on quantitative data is found that the students’ speaking ability by using immersion program method improved from pre-test ti cycle I and cycle II. It can be seen from the students’ mean of students’ score and percentage of students who got score ≥ 75. The mean of students’ score and percentage of students who got ≥ 75 for pre-test is 56,54 (6,54%) and for cycle I is 74,51 (29,03%) and for cycle II is 85,09 (90,32%). The conclusion is there is an improvement in increasing the students’ knowledge in speaking by using immersion program method in class X of SMA Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan, especially for English teacher, immersion program method can help teacher to make students to be more interested, active and enthusiastic when teaching English speaking
