An Analysis of Students’ Translation in Eleventh Grade at SMK Swasta Jambi Medan
Abstract
In this research, the researcher focussed on students’ translation in eleventh grade at SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. The objective of this study is to find out the kinds of translation used by the students and to identify the most dominant type of translation used by the students in translating a text. The subject of this study is the eleventh grade of SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. The data was a text that the students translated into Indonesia. This research used descriptive qualitative method as a research design. The researcher collected data through steps by analyzed the students’ paper in translating a text into Indonesia. Finally the result of this study showed that there are six types translation used by the students in translating a text, namely literal translation(49%), word for word translation(3,55%), free translation(17,67%), faithful translation(27%), semantic translation(0,40%), communicative translation(2,38%). And the most dominant translation types used by the students are literal translation(49%). Based on the result of the study, the writer only found six types from eight types that should be based on Peter Newmark’s theory. The students were difficult to translate a text and some of them just used their mind or their logic to translate a text. The writer suggests that the teacher keep their attention in teaching the students about translation and improve the students vocabulary so that they can use the good English in translating a text into Indonesia as well in translating text.
