AN ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL COHESION OF READING TEXT OF “ENGLISH IN FOCUS” OF NINTH GRADE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PUBLISHED BY DEPARTEMEN PENDIDIKAN NASIONAL
Abstract
Language is a tool for communication. Almost every day human has communication to other. The function of language itself are to give information, to pour the idea, to make suggestion and many else. Language is not only in spoken, but also in the written. We can see many media. Like; magazine, newspaper, novel, textbook, and in daily conversation. This thesis discuss the types of grammatical cohesion and find the most dominant grammatical cohesion occurred of the Reading Text of “English In Focus” of Ninth Grade Junior High School Published By Departemen Pendidikan Nasional special in narrative and spoof text.
This study is using Hasan and Halliday theory. It is discourse field and there is grammatical cohesion that explained in this story. This study also used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher wants to get detailed understanding about grammatical cohesion and the most dominant grammatical cohesion occur in the textbook. The writer read the textbook and chooses two kinds of reading text namely narrative and spoof text, then collect the data, classifying the data to the types of grammatical cohesion, explained the data, explained and interpret all the grammatical cohesion used in the textbook and make the conclusion.
The result of the first research problem is there are 9 types of grammatical cohesion, those are personal reference, demonstrative reference, nominal substitution, nominal ellipsis and verbal ellipsis, additive conjunction – clausal conjunction – adversative conjunction and temporal conjunction. The result of the second problem is the writer got 54,96% consist of 72 reference. Then 32,06 % consist of 42 conjunction. After that 12,21% consist of 16 ellipsis and the rare is substitution 0,76% consist of 1 substitution.
