The Effect of Point-Counterpoint Strategy on Students’ Speaking Ability in Conversation at SMP NASRANI 2 Medan
Abstract
This study is intended to find out the effect of point counterpoint strategy on students speaking ability, it is common for teachers now to use a modern teaching model as a tool in teaching learning process including Point-Counterpoint strategy. This study used experimental quantitative design to implement the research which used construct validity, reliability in conversation at SMP Nasrani 2 Medan. The purpose of this research was to find the effectiveness of Point-Counterpoint Strategy on students’ speaking ability in conversation at SMP Nasrani 2 Medan. The example was 40 tenth grade students of SMP Nasrani 2 Medan from two classes namely class IX- A and IX-B after they have been selected in simple random and lottery sampling technique, ten they were divided as experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using point-counterpoint strategy and control group was taught by using Oral Test. After adapting the data into T-test formula. The result shows that t-observed value (3,91> 2.042) at the level significance 0,05 and the degree of freedom (df) is 38. The null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative is accepted. It implies that Point-Counterpoint strategy significantly affect the student speaking ability.
