Error Analysis in Paraphrasing an Article of the Sixth English Department Students of FKIP Nommensen HKBP University Medan.
Abstract
This thesis focused on finding out the errors in paraphrasing an article at third year “ Sixth Semester” at Nommesen HKBP University of Medan. This research was conducted to English department students group C. They consist of 42 students. The instrument of collecting the data was writing test. This research was done in English Department of Nommensen HKBP University of Medan in academic year 2017/ 2018. The research design was mixed method. Mixed method is one of research design which combines between qualitative and quantative data. The writer usedtheory of Carl James (1998 : 111). There are five types of error based on surface strategy taxonomy, namely omission, overinclusion, misselection, misordering and blends. In analayzing the data, the result showed that the students made errors in paraphrasing an article. Based on research findings, the result ofquantitative data analysis showed that the students did not understand about paraphrasing, because their mean score was 74.26. There were 22 students who got score under KKM (minimum completeness criteria) score. The result of qualitative data showed that the total number of all error in paraphrasing an article was 134 errors. Based on table of data analysis and table of error’s percentage, the writer found the error of omission 29 errors i.e, 21.6 %, error of overinclusion 25 errors i.e, 18.6 %, error of misselection 76 errors i.e, 56.8 %, error of misordering 2 errors i.e, 1.5 %, and error of blends 2 errors i.e, 1.5 %. Actually they knew the grammatical rules, but they confused to use the correct grammar. So they made the errors.
