The population of this research was 60 students which consist of two classes. The researcher took 40 students from the both of group as total sampling to see the effect of Portfolio Assessment as teaching method toward the students’ vocabulary mastery. The data were taken by giving vocabulary test which consists of multiple choice which consisted if 25 items and matching which consisted of 25 items. The test were divided into two test : pre- test and post test for both experimental and control group. The mean of the students for pre-test in experimental group is 47,1 and the mean for post test in experimental group is 70,3. The mean score for pre – test in control group is 51,1 and the mean for post test in control group is higher than control group. The result that t-calculated > t-table at the level of significance p= 0.01 (2,80 > 2,0424). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that Portfolio Assessment can be used as teaching method as alternative toenrich students’ vocabulary mastery at the first grade year students of Vocational High School.
