An Analysis of Illocutionary Act in "Emma" Movie.

Abstract

This study disscuses the types and how is the illocutionary act realized contained in the Emma’s utterances of the main character in the “Emma” movie script. The types of illocutionary act focused in this study by using Searle's theory to answer the formulated study question. Movie can express to the audience the character of the player, and the conversation their present is a significant utterance for the audience who has experienced it in real life. This movie tells the life story of Emma Woodhouse, who as the main character, a beautiful and smart girl. The study used qualitative descriptive by analyzing Emma’s utterances as the main data. Furthermore, the source of the data in this study was collected by downloading the script from Internet. The result of the study shows that there are 100 utterances of the Emma’s utterances as the main character in the “Emma” movie script that contain illocutionary act. The data were classified in to four types of illocutionarry act namely are representatives (49), directives (32), commissives (9), expressives (10). Of the total 100 illocutionary acts, representatives are the most types of illocutionary acts because “Emma” of the main character mostly expressed her utterances by describing, affirming, stating, informing, complaining. Conversely, the declarative types of illocutionary act were not appeared in this study because Emma’s utterance act were not selected as the object to analyze. There were the illocutionary act relized in Emma movie, representatives realized because Emma’s utterance the most by informing because Emma is realized that she is a smart girl and she always wants to informed what she believes to the people around her.
