LEXICAL RELATION ANALYSIS IN COLDPLAY’S SELECTED SONG LYRICS
Abstract
This study aims to identify the types of lexical relations found in the song lyrics of Coldplay’s selected songs and determines how these types can be realized in this analysis. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the objects, which are twenty-five selected Coldplay song lyrics, are accumulated and the relationships between the words in each song are searched for. The relationships between these words are data that is collected and analyzed according to the relationships that have been identified. Based on the classification theory from Saeed (2003), it is found 39 relations of synonym (25.5%), 33 relations of antonym (21.6%), 30
relations of polysemy (19.7%), 25 relations of homonym (16.3%), 11 relations of hyponym (7.1%), and 15 relations of meronym (9.8%). In this research, it is also concluded that synonym is the most dominant relationship in this analysis and hyponym is the least findings in this research. Besides, there are two songs that have the highest number of data or relations in this research, namely Charlie Brown and Hymn for the Weekend, which both have 11 relations. All six types of lexical relations are found in complete in the song Fun and the song Higher Power. The lexical relations found in song lyrics certainly provide a certain interpretation for each word.
