dc.description.abstract | Reading is one of the four language skills taught in English language learning process besides listening, speaking and writing. Reading is an activity to gain some information from the text through written text. This study focuses on the obstacles experienced by students in reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to determine the obstacles faced by students, to determine the factors causing the obstacles experienced by the eleventh graders at SMA Swasta GKPI Padang Bulan and to find the dominant student obstacle in reading comprehension. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method, where the instrument used to obtain data is by distributing questionnaires. The questionnaire in this study used a Likert scale consisting of 20 statements for 20 samples. Based on the data that has been collected which is then analyzed with a percentage index, the results of student respondents indicate that most students experience obstacles in reading comprehension. The results of the study based on percentage of student responses in the questionnaire, the obstacles experienced by students are (1) Lack of vocabulary with a percentage of 53.3%, (2) Difficulty in understanding the structure and grammar of the text read as much as 47.5%, (3) Lack of reading strategies 45%, (4) difficulty translating text into Indonesian 51, 6%,(5) Difficulty in determining the main idea 42.5%. From the percentage results, it was also found that the dominant obstacle experienced by students was lack of vocabulary with higher percentage results as much as 53.3%. As for the causative factors occur due to internal and external factors such as motivation, environment, and facilities in learning. | en_US |
