TRANSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF PHILIP MANTOFA’S SERMON “THE GREATEST JOY IS SALVATION“

Abstract

This thesis aims to determine the types of process that occured, the most dominant process and the realization of the Transitivity system in Ps. Philip Mantofa’s sermon entitled "The Greatest Joy is Salvation". This thesis used the theory of Systemic Functional Grammar by M. A. K Halliday using mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative). Transitivity was used to express the message of the sermon and could also reveal the characteristics and strategies of delivering the message by the preacher. The results of the analysis showed that in this sermon there were all types of transitivity (6 types) processes. The types of transitivity consist of material processes (43.06%) followed by relational processes (26.3%), mental processes (20.23%), verbal processes (7.8%), behavioral processes (1.44%) and existential processes (1.15%). Material Process is the most dominant process in this research. The acquisition of material process as the most dominant process can be interpreted that Ps. Philip Mantofa is right in using the material process, because the sermon essentially aims to invite right actions from the congregation.
