dc.description.abstractThis thesis title is "Speech Act Used in The New Testament Holy Bible 'The Sermon on the Mount". In writing this paper, the study of linguistics by applying the Descriptive Qualitative Method is applied by the writer. The theory of speech act classification applied is by George Yule (1996) to determine the classification of speech acts into declarations, representatives, expressive, directives, and commissives, and the instrument to collect the data was observed. The data were 108 and contained 84 utterances taken from Matthew 5-7 on Holy Bible. The interactive data analysis model from Mahsun (2012:258). The result of the study showed that the writer found five types of speech act, they were Declarations (19,04%), Representatives (27,38%), Expressives (3,57%), Directives (45,23%), and Commissive (4,76%). The most dominant speech act is directives which meant that there were many commands, orders, requests, and suggestions in the sermon. It is important to understand about speech act because by understanding the parts of speech acts we can also distinguish the type and their uses based on utterance in the sermon.en_US
