| dc.description.abstract | This thesis entitled “A Translation Shift Analysis in Bilingual Comics Wow! – Pinocchio”. This study was aimed to identify category shifts that occur in bilingual comic book and to explain the reasons why category shifts can occur in bilingual comic book. This study used theory of translation shift that proposed by Catford (1965) who divided obligatory shift into two major types, namely level shift and category shifts (structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift). This study used descriptive qualitative method to describe the types of category shifts occurred in bilingual comic book. The data were the dialogues of bilingual comic book. Based on the result, the writer found 110 category shifts, namely 34 cases or 30.1 % of unit shifts, 28 cases or 25.5 % of class shifts, 25 cases or 22.7 % of structure shifts, and 23 cases or 20.9 % of intra-system shifts. It can be concluded that there are two reasons why category shifts occurred in bilingual comic book translation, namely linguistic and cultural factors. Based on the analysis, category shifts mostly occur in bilingual comic book is caused by linguistic factors due to the fact that every language has its own linguistic features. The types of category shift cover all kinds of grammatical changes from the source language to the target language. Those changes include changes of structure, class, unit, and system. | en_US |
