dc.description.abstractThis research investigated the student’s ability in English conversation. The title of research is the analysis negotiation of meaning in speaking class. This research is aimed at, 1)To find out the types negotiation of meaning used by the students on fourth semester English of Nommensen HKBP University; 2)To know the dominant types negotiation of meaning on fourth semester English of Nom-mensen HKBP University. The method of this research is qualitative research which uses some techniques to collect the data. The object of this research is the students on fourth semester English of Nommensen HKBP University. There were sixteen of students as a sample. The data were obtained through video recording. The result showed that the students used five types negotiation of meaning in transactional speaking, including; Confirmation check (39,3%), Comprehension Check (25%), Clarification Check (21,4%), Appealing for help (10,7) and Repetition (3,6%). So, confirmation check negotiation of meaning become the dominant type in this researchen_US
