dc.description.abstract | This study focused on find out what types of metaphors from dead metaphor, cliche metaphor, stock or standard metaphor, adapted metaphor, recent metaphor and original metaphor used in English novel entitled The Black Cat and Other Stories 1991 in chapter one and two, to find out what is the most dominant type of metaphor from dead metaphor, cliche metaphor, stock or standard metaphor, adapted metaphor, recent metaphor and original metaphor used in English novel entitled The Black Cat and Other Stories 1991 in chapter one two. The instrument of collecting data was document analysis. The research design was descriptive qualitative research. Descriptive qualitative method is to ensure that the evidence obtained enables us to answer the initial question as unambiguously as possible. The writer used theory of Newmark (1988:106). Metaphor is any figurative expression: the transferred sense of a physical word; the personification of and abstraction; the application of a word or collocation to what it does not literally denote. The result of the research, to analyze what types of metaphors in English novel entitled Bridget Jones's diary bye Helen Fielding 1997 in chapter two. The writer found out six types of metaphors, namely dead metaphor, cliche metaphor, stock or standard metaphor, adapted metaphor, recent metaphor and original metapho in English metaphor. The total of data were 31 sentence, 8 sentence for dead metaphors (25%), 4 sentence for Cliche Metaphors (13%), 7 sentence for Stock or Standard Metaphors (22%), 3 sentence for Adapted metaphors (9%), 2 sentence for recent metaphor (6%), 8 sentence for original metaphors (25%). And in the indonesian metaphors. So, the most dominant type of English metaphor from dead metaphor, cliche metaphor, stock or standard metaphor, adapted metaphor, recent metaphor and original metaphor used in English novel entitled the black cat and other stories in chapter one and two is Dead metaphor (25%) and Original metaphor (25%). | en_US |
