An Analysis Of Negative Politeness Used By Eleventh- Grade Sudents In English Learning At SMA Swasta Gajah Mada Medan
Abstract
Negative politeness strategy is one of the strategies proposed by brown and levinson (1987) which is aimed at the negative face of the listener and is intended to avoid coercion of the listener. Use negative politeness strategies when the speaker thinks that the utterance will coerce the listener in some way and wants to avoid feeling awkward or embarrassed. This research aims to identify the sub-types negative politeness strategies are used by eleventh grade students at Gajah Mada Private High School when the learning process takes place in the classroom, find out what meaning is contained in each utterance containing negative politeness strategies, and find out the type of negative politeness that is dominantly used by students. This research uses descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data of this study comes from the utterances of eleventh grade students who use the sub-types of negative politeness strategies. The data source comes from the transcript of negative politeness strategy speech acts of eleventh grade students during English learning activities. The result of this study found that there are 7 sub-types of negative politeness strategy found from 32 data. Then the most dominant sub-type of negative politeness strategy is be conventionally indirect as much as 9 data (28,1%). The meaning in each of these utterances is the action taken by the interlocutor.
