Abstract
This research is intended to find out what difficulties students face when changing active voice to passive voice in writing. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive research design. This research aims to find out what difficulties are faced by ten-eighth grade students at SMAN 21 Medan. Data was collected through analysis of the results of interviews and written texts by ten-eighth grade students in changing active voice to passive from 32 students. The researcher's data collection technique provides interview questions and questions in active voice and then asks students to change to passive voice. From the results of the interviews, students had difficulty determining the subject and object in passive voice, and students were confused about using the auxiliary verb to be and had difficulty changing verbs from active voice to Verb 3 in passive voice. In the written text results, 19 dominant students made errors in using the auxiliary verb be, 10 dominant students made errors in distinguishing past tense and past participle, and 3 dominant students made errors in using the auxiliary verb be and distinguishing past tense and past participle. This is because students' vocabulary is still low.
