Abstract
This research aims to find out whether the Semantic Mapping strategy has a significant effect on the ability of class VIII students to write descriptive texts at SMPN 37 Medan. This research used a quasi-experimental type of research with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The design only looks at students' writing abilities before and after using the Semantic Mapping strategy. Before testing students, the researcher conducted an instrumental test first. To determine the validity and reliability of the instrument. Research findings show that the semantic mapping strategy has an impact on the ability of class VIII students at SMPN 37 to write descriptive text in paragraphs. This is shown by the test results in the post-test, students after using the Semantic Mapping strategy had a higher average score. Apart from having a normal distribution, the data in this study is also homogeneous. Based on data analysis using the T-test, it was obtained that
=7, 567 at a significance level of = 5%, dk (n-1) = (30-1) = 29, so = 1.70. It can be concluded that > (7, 567 > 1.70). This means that o is rejected and a is accepted. So, the Semantic Mapping strategy has a significant influence on the ability of class VIII students to write descriptive texts at SMPN 37 Medan.
